WHO SHE IS

Jennifer Duque, LCPC is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor licensed in the state of Illinois.  Jennifer has her own practice in the suburbs of Chicago and has been in the counseling field for over 15 years.

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

Jennifer has a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and specializes in working with individuals and couples dealing with relationship issues.  Jennifer spent most of the beginning of her career working with men, women, and children who were affected by domestic violence.   She was a clinical supervisor and headed the counseling department at a local domestic violence agency.  Jennifer also specialized in training counselors, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals on the importance of identifying, understanding, and treating those affected by domestic violence.

Today, Jennifer enjoys working in her own practice where she treats a variety of individuals and issues.  She has continued to find however, that most people seeking counseling are reaching out due to some sort of relationship problem.  She also works with individuals suffering with depression and anxiety, job-related issues, bereavement and loss issues, eating disorders, parenting issues, divorce, and other life stressor issues.

PHILOSOPHY ON BEHAVIOR AND CHANGE

Jennifer’s philosophy on human behavior is that people are driven by a need to gain control over their own lives.  The challenge is; there are so many things that happen to all of us throughout our lives that are completely out of our control, and this is when people begin to struggle.  It is a huge task to learn to accept the things that we can not change, and the direction that many of us take is to try to gain control over our own lives by trying to control other people.  We know, logically, that this never works, but we do it anyway.  Jennifer’s philosophy on change is that change does not happen without taking some risks. “Risks” meaning, daring to do something different than what you were doing before.   Doing something different may include learning to think about issues from a different perspective, changing behaviors, or learning new, healthy, and effective coping strategies.  This is where counseling is useful, and it is the therapeutic relationship that drives this change.
